My question today is, part of our plan is to have a Native American dating site to help drive traffic to the adult side of our idea. I have spent hours looking at various websites selling dating software, even bought a few and HATED IT!!!
Can someone recommend a great software package?

I recall seeing some Joomla Extensions that can turn it into a social networking style package. Don't know anybody who has tried it though...

Really? I have had a few problems with tech support, but for the most part - they were good.

Trust the recommendations of people you know and trust
then after that, do all the extra research to be sure since in the end, you're spending your money

Hire a programmer is you have to.
I think it's a waste of money to buy an already made Dating site out of a box. Seriously...have ANY of those ever became successful?????? And if one did... for $29.99 you could have a competitor popup with a site that is legally identical consisting of the same exact features. Big no no....

Custom would be ideal, but most people don't have that kind of money to start out. A 3rd party script is inexpensive. If the site is successful, then they can always 'upgrade' to a custom made site.
I've had a few clients become successful with 3rd party scripts. Not successful like match type sites... but successful enough to quit their part time job.

I've always wondered how these start ups cope with a zero member level, after all if your starting from fresh with either a custom or 3rd party script the database will have no members and this is the reason I moved down the white label route - I would have loved to start up my own contacts site rather than using someone else's database but starting with zero members has got to be hard work - after all would you join a contacts site with no members?
So what do start ups do? you can offer free memberships but would people still join? I don't think so

free memberships, people sign up and walk away
But if you want to start a datingsite anyway buy a 3rd party script opensource and highly hackable and add features yourself (if you have the skills)

my main market is contacts and whilst I agree its not an easy market but that applies to everything - but starting with an empty database would be very hard work

But there is a difference in building you own datingsite and try to get people to sign up
or building portals and send traffic/new members to the existing big boys with full data bases

The only advantage is the county / town sites don't take much effort to gain rankings and in quite a few town searches I take the top few places with nationwide sites listed within that

In my personal experience Swingers or Daters like to sign up for sites which have far more people and especially much more pictures in their databases, sure the first search string is their own town but in the end they like to chat mail with almost everyone since it almost never comes to a real encounter.
They like to keep it virtual
